It takes courage and strength to fight against life’s adversity, and naive optimism is a great way to remain ignorant. However, we, as creatures of potential, have the ability to influence and change the burdens. The fairness in life is that it is indiscriminately unfair. Sometimes good things happen to bad people, and bad things happen to good people. There are mental illnesses that exist, and life has its random elements. This isn’t to say that courage is the only solution. The bully might not back down, might not stop, but you’ve already proven that you won’t sit still. However, all it takes is building courage and standing against them once to realize that you have the strength to fight back. They are bigger than you and stronger than you. Imagine standing to face a bully that has been pushing you around for months. Facing something like that requires an immense amount of courage. So much that without a powerful meaning, it can and will crush us thoroughly. If Nihilism is not the answer, and naive optimism isn’t either, then where is the line? It seems, to me at least, that Buddhism got one thing right, life is suffering. If you live life awake and with your eyes open, as you should, you will see that being happy is more than just some naive optimism.
